International rap and hip-hop sensation Post Malone is set to perform live in Guwahati on December 8, marking a historic moment for Assam’s entertainment landscape and the official launch of the state’s ambitious concert economy initiative.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following the state cabinet’s approval of the “Policy for Concert Tourism in Assam,” a groundbreaking framework designed to position the northeastern state as a premier music and tourism destination.
This will be Post Malone’s second performance in India, following his successful debut show at Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi Race Course in December 2022. The artist, known for chart-topping hits like “Circles,” “Rockstar,” and “Congratulations,” has amassed a global following with his unique blend of hip-hop, pop, and rock influences.
The concert represents the centerpiece of Assam’s newly approved concert tourism policy, which aims to capitalize on India’s rapidly growing concert economy. This sector has experienced remarkable expansion driven by rising disposable incomes, a young and experience-focused demographic, rapid digital adoption, and an increasing appetite for large-scale live entertainment events.
Under the new policy framework, Assam plans to develop state-of-the-art concert venues equipped with world-class lighting and sound technology. The state tourism department will provide essential support through viability gap funding, ensuring that major international and domestic artists can perform in settings that meet international standards.
Three cities have been designated as concert tourism hubs under this initiative: Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Jorhat. This strategic distribution aims to spread economic benefits across different regions while creating multiple venues capable of hosting major entertainment events.
The Post Malone concert is expected to attract music fans not only from across the Northeast but from other parts of India as well, potentially generating significant revenue through ticket sales, hotel bookings, dining, transportation, and merchandise purchases. Local businesses across Guwahati are anticipating a substantial boost from the influx of visitors.
For the Northeast region, this development represents a significant cultural milestone. Rarely have international artists of Post Malone’s caliber performed in the region, making this concert a landmark event that could reshape perceptions about the Northeast as an entertainment destination.
