On April 28, a 26-year-old youth attempted self-annihilation by jumping into the Brahmaputra River from Saraight Bridge. A police team from Jalukbari police station immediately rushed to the site upon receiving information about the incident.
Lankeswar Kalita, on-duty police personnel, rescued the boy without fearing for his own life.
Taking to Twitter, Assam DGP, IPS GP Singh said that – In a valiant effort, UBC Lankeshwar Kalita of Jalukbari OP scaled the railing to save one young person from committing suicide by jumping into mighty River Brahmaputra. His effort is lauded and being appropriately rewarded by Assam Police.
For Mr. Kalita’s courage and dedication towards his duty, Guwahati Commissioner of Police, IPS Diganta Barah, announced a cash reward of 10,000 rupees. In an official order, Mr. Barah added that ” For the exemplary courage and dedication to duty shown by the police personnel, UBC/1167 Lankeswar Kalita of Jalukbari outpost is awarded a money reward of Rs. 10,000/- (Ten Thousand) only.”
