Hazarika, born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya, Assam, was one of India’s most influential cultural icons. Known as the “Bard of Brahmaputra,” he composed timeless songs in Assamese and other Indian languages that blended folk traditions with universal themes of humanity and social justice.

Over a six-decade career, Hazarika established himself as a playback singer, lyricist, and filmmaker. His songs often carried powerful messages of communal harmony, equality, and resilience, earning him a place among India’s most respected voices in music and culture.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 2012. In 2019, the Government of India conferred on him the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honor.

Political leaders and cultural organizations across the Northeast and beyond marked the centenary with tributes and events highlighting his legacy. Cultural scholars describe his music as a bridge between tradition and modernity, rooted in Assamese identity yet resonating globally.

“Bhupen Hazarika’s voice was the voice of the people,” said an official from the Assam Cultural Affairs Department. “His songs carried messages of unity that remain relevant even today.”

The centenary year is expected to see concerts, exhibitions, and academic programs across India celebrating Hazarika’s enduring impact on music and social thought.
