Over 74 percent of 1.15 lakh voters exercised their franchise in elections for 22 seats in Assam’s North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC). The counting of votes will take place on January 12th.

Election officials reported that polling was conducted peacefully across 231 stations without any major incidents. Approximately 15 stations were marked “very sensitive” and 36 “sensitive” by authorities.

Voting began at 8 am and saw a tentative turnout of 74 percent at the time of this report. The final voter turnout numbers are expected to rise as counting continues over the next day, officials said Tuesday.

Out of 28 total NCHAC constituencies across Dima Hasao district, candidates from the BJP won uncontested in 6 seats already. The election will decide representatives for the remaining 22 seats.

16 polling stations were set up exclusively for female voters during this round of Council elections, which happen every five years.
