The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two additional suspects, Bhargob Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi, in connection with a plot by the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) [ULFA(I)] to execute a series of IED blasts across Assam during Independence Day celebrations in 2024. The arrests were made on July 15 in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, according to NIA officials.
The duo is accused of direct involvement in a conspiracy to plant explosives aimed at spreading fear and undermining national security. The plot came to light following the recovery of an IED in Guwahati, allegedly placed by ULFA(I) operatives as part of a broader scheme to carry out coordinated blasts across the state.
“With these arrests, the total number of accused taken into custody in this case has risen to three,” the NIA stated. The agency took over the investigation from Dispur Police in September 2024 and filed a chargesheet against three individuals last month in connection with the same case.
The NIA continues its efforts to dismantle what it describes as a terror conspiracy designed to disrupt peace and threaten India’s sovereignty. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further details and prevent future threats.
