Nayanmoni Saikia: Lawn bowl gold medalist Nayanmoni Saikia to be promoted

Gold medalist Nayanmoni Saikia from Assam is one of the Indian Women Lawn Bowl team members who bagged the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games; 2022 and will soon be promoted as DySP in Assam.

The Assam Forest Department has decided as she is currently employed as a constable in Assam Forest Department.

As per reports, Rajesh Singh, Superintendent of Police of the newly-formed Tamulpur district in BTR Assam, said, “She will soon become an Assistant Commandant, a rank equivalent to that of DySP as per our state’s policy as she has won the gold medal,”

Additionally, Nayanmoni’s husband, Bhaskar Jyoti Gohain, said, “Nayanmoni was a very dedicated weightlifter earlier. Her whole life revolved around sports. But a leg injury meant that her performances kept deteriorating. Till she found Lawn Bowls. That became her passion after that. She has faced many challenges in her life, but she never sacrificed the game,”

The Indian Women team, on Tuesday (August 2), led by Lovely Choubey, followed by Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia (third) and Rupa Rani Tirkey (fourth), marked history by bagging a Gold medal in Lawn Bowl at the Commonwealth Games, 2022.

Nayanmoni was born in Golaghat, Assam. She started her career in sports by weightlifting, as she was always passionate about sports. However, because of a leg injury, she chose Lawn Bowls.

She represented Assam and India several times. In National Games held in 2011 and 2015, she won gold medals in individual and team events. Moreover, in 2012, during the Asian Lawn Bowls Championship, she was also able to bag the gold medal in the girls under-25 category.

She also represented India in the Commonwealth games held in the years 2014 and 2018.
