A teacher at West Bonbhag Higher Secondary School in Khatikuchi, Nalbari, has been detained by police following allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards a Class 12 girl student, triggering widespread concern within the local education community.
The accused, identified as Abed Ali, allegedly sent objectionable messages and made repeated late-night calls to the student, leading to severe emotional distress. The student reportedly stopped attending classes due to the persistent harassment.
According to local sources, the student’s family and community members confronted the teacher after discovering the nature of his conduct. Facing public anger, Ali sought shelter at the Khatikuchi hospital, where he was later detained by personnel from the Ghagrapar police station.
“We have taken the teacher into custody based on the complaint and are currently questioning him. A detailed investigation is underway,” a police official confirmed, requesting anonymity.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and educators, many of whom are demanding strict action against the teacher and a formal review of safety protocols in schools. “This is not just a violation of trust, but a breach of the school’s responsibility to safeguard its students,” said a local education activist.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether formal charges have been filed. Meanwhile, the school management has not issued an official statement regarding the status of the accused teacher.
