A mild earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale was recorded in Assam’s Kokrajhar district late Tuesday night, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The seismic event occurred at precisely 11:05:55 PM IST on May 6, 2025.

The NCS, which operates under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, confirmed the tremor through its official social media channels, providing specific coordinates for the epicenter.
According to the data released, the earthquake was centered at latitude 26.35 N and longitude 90.01 E, with a focal depth of 20 kilometers below the earth’s surface.
No casualties, injuries, or significant property damage have been reported following the seismic event.
Local authorities have been monitoring the situation, but emergency services have not received distress calls related to the tremor.
The Kokrajhar district, located in western Assam, falls within a seismically active zone.
According to earthquake tracking resources, the region experiences regular seismic activity, with Assam averaging approximately 20 earthquakes of magnitude 2 or higher annually.
