In a major crackdown on the drug trade, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police, in a joint operation with the Cachar district police, seized a massive haul of 21 kilograms of heroin worth a staggering 210 crore in the international market.
The operation, led by Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Inspector-General of Police (STF), and Numal Mahatta, Superintendent of Police of Cachar, was carried out on Thursday night near the Sayeedpur area under the Silchar police station in Cachar district.
Acting on a tip-off, the authorities intercepted a vehicle with the registration number MZ-01-7204 and discovered the illicit consignment during a search.
“During the search, we recovered more than 21 kg of heroin (pure form). A man has also been arrested. The seized contraband is worth a minimum of 210 crore in the international market,” Inspector-General of Police (STF), Partha Sarathi Mahanta, said in a statement.
Mahanta revealed that the information about the impending drug shipment was received 10 days ago, indicating that the drug was being transported from a neighboring state to the mainland, where it could have been further distributed to major cities.
“We also seized the vehicle, which was coming from a neighboring state. Further investigation is underway,” the senior police officer added.
Praising the efforts of the Assam Police, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to commend the successful operation, stating, “In a big step towards a drug-free Assam, 21 kg of heroin has been seized in Silchar in a joint operation by STF Assam and Cachar Police. One person has been arrested, and an investigation is underway to crack the supply grid. Well done, Assam Police.”
The seizure of this massive quantity of heroin is a significant victory for the law enforcement agencies in their ongoing battle against the drug menace in the region. The investigation is expected to uncover the wider network behind this illicit trade, potentially leading to further arrests and disrupting the drug supply chain.
