Major Police Reshuffling in Assam: 83 Sub-Inspectors Transferred Following Suspicious Death Incident

DGP Assam GP Singh

In a large-scale reshuffling move by the Assam Police Department, 83 sub-inspectors have been transferred across various Defense Forces, Organizations, and Units. The sweeping move, ordered by Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh on Saturday, followed closely on the heels of transfers involving Superintendents of Police and Additional Superintendents of Police.

The transfers have been prompted by a recent incident involving the suspicious death of sub-inspector Junmoni Rabha from Morikolong, leading to substantial changes within the state’s home department. DGP GP Singh issued the order hours after overseeing the transfer of top-level officials, extending the reshuffling to the sub-inspectors. The notification released by the department stated that the transfers were made against existing vacancies in the respective units.

Among the notable transfers was the repositioning of social media sensation and known vigilante Assam cop, Anand Mishra. Previously serving as the Assistant Inspector General of Police (Sports), Mishra has now been appointed as the Superintendent of Police for Lakhimpur. In a concurrent move, Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa, the erstwhile Superintendent of Police for Lakhimpur, will take on the role of Assistant Inspector General (Sports), Assam.

Further noteworthy changes include Leena Doley’s transfer from her position as Superintendent of Police, Nagaon, to Superintendent of Police, Hailakandi. Replacing her in Nagaon will be Nabaneet Mahanta, the previous Superintendent of Police for Hailakandi. Additionally, four police officials, including Rupjyoti Kalita, the Additional SP (Crime) for Nagaon, were assigned to the Assam Police Headquarters last Friday.

These massive shifts within the department appear to be direct responses to the tragic and suspicious incident involving sub-inspector Rabha. As the department copes with this internal crisis, the large-scale transfers aim to fill vacancies, promote effective policing, and maintain order within the ranks.
