An Assamese woman has been honoured with a theatre at the University of New South Wales in Australia. This honour is given to Lt. Annada Gohain. At the university’s CLB, Lecture Theatre G06 will be replaced with the Annada Gohain Theatre.

Annada Gohain received a Chemistry Honours degree from Cotton College in 1948. In 1955, she left for Australia to enrol in a unique, two-year Colombo Plan study in food technology offered by the University of New South Wales.

You may have noticed some new signs and names popping up around campus. 👀

She went on after passing the course until 1959 to conduct the study that led to the awarding of her M.Sc. Annada Gohain was the daughter of renowned educator Mahendra Nath Gohain of Nizarapar in Guwahati. Jitendra Nath Gohain, her spouse, died.

Taking to Twitter, Assam Education Minister said – Heartening to learn about @UNSW‘s gesture to name its theatre after Annada Gohain, the first woman to graduate from UNSW’s School of Chemical Engineering. She was a trailblazer regarding women’s education and her story will continue to inspire women from across the world to continue pursuing their dreams.

Annada Gohain, a resident of Kharghuli, passed away on September 19, 2011, at the age of 81, in a Guwahati private hospital. She left her position as Additional Director (Agriculture) for the Assam Government in 2007.

It is important to remember that the Distinguished Late Annada was Dr. Hiren Gohain’s older sister, a critic and scholar.

Celebrating UNSW Women seeks to improve the visibility of women throughout UNSW’s public, physical, and digital venues, according to the university’s official website. A better representation of the outstanding and diverse UNSW community is the goal of this collaborative university-wide endeavour. As the top university in Australia, we must set an example for gender equality.
