At a ceremony conducted at Sarusajai on Thursday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accepted the Geographical Indication Registration Certificate for the Axomiya Gamosa from Unnat Pandit, the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks and Registrar of GI Registry.
Gamosa comes in eight different types, including Uka or Xadharan Gamosa, Phulam Gamosa, Bihuwan, Tiani or Pani Gamosa, Anakata Gamosa, Telos Gamosa, Dora Boron or Jor Gamosa, and Gossain Gamosa, which are all listed in the GI Registry.
Since no other organisation is permitted to create or promote the product as a result of this legal recognition, the Asomiya Gamosa’s quality and uniqueness are safeguarded.
Just before the Rongali Bihu celebrations, Chief Minister Sarma spoke on the occasion and conveyed his pride and honour for the Assamese people.
He emphasised how the GI tag would protect the rights of thousands of weavers in the state and boost Assam’s ascent to international prominence.
The Chief Minister congratulated the people of Assam on receiving this honour and noted that the recognition of Asomiya Gamosa is an important milestone in promoting Assam’s rich culture and heritage around the world.
