Guwahati is set to strengthen its international air connectivity with the launch of non-stop Air India flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi from August 4. The new services are expected to enhance travel options for passengers from Assam and the wider Northeast region while reinforcing Guwahati’s growing role as a regional aviation hub.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the development through a post on social media, describing it as a step towards connecting Assam more closely with the global community. The introduction of direct flights to the United Arab Emirates will provide improved access to one of the region’s most important international travel and business destinations.
With the commencement of these services, Guwahati Airport will establish direct air connectivity with four countries — the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Singapore and Bhutan. The expansion is being viewed as a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to improve international travel infrastructure and increase global engagement.
Officials said the new routes are aimed at strengthening international connectivity from the Northeast and making travel more convenient for passengers. Improved air links are also expected to benefit trade, tourism, business exchanges and cultural interactions between Assam and international destinations.
Further expansion of Guwahati’s international network is also under consideration. Authorities are reportedly exploring the possibility of introducing direct flight services to Vietnam as part of broader plans to enhance the city’s global connectivity.
Meanwhile, Assam has received another positive boost on the international front, with the European Union withdrawing its earlier travel advisory for the state following a recent visit by EU diplomats. Australia and Japan had also revised similar advisories in the past.
Officials believe these developments reflect growing international confidence in Assam and are likely to contribute to increased tourist arrivals, greater business opportunities and stronger people-to-people connections. The addition of direct flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi is expected to further position Guwahati as a key aviation gateway for the Northeast and an emerging centre for international travel.
