Dispur police on Tuesday arrested a man who filed a fraudulent robbery complaint to conceal his embezzlement of Rs 7 lakh from his employer, with investigators recovering the entire amount from his rented residence.
The accused, Dhruba Kalita of Sipajhar town in Darrang district, was staying at a rented house in Guwahati’s Sarusajai area while working for a private company.
Elaborate Cover-Up Unravels
Kalita had misappropriated Rs 7 lakh in company funds and attempted to conceal the theft by fabricating a snatching incident near his home. On Monday afternoon, he filed a complaint at Bhagaduttapur police outpost claiming unidentified robbers had sedated him with a spray and fled with his cash.
CCTV Footage Exposes Lies
Police personnel from the outpost and Dispur police station launched an immediate investigation that quickly exposed inconsistencies in Kalita’s account.
“When police began investigating, CCTV footage from the area revealed inconsistencies in his statements. Further inquiry revealed that no snatching had taken place. Instead, Kalita had hidden the entire amount at his rented residence,” said Mrinal Deka, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West).
Full Amount Recovered
The entire Rs 7 lakh was recovered from Kalita’s residence following the investigation. Dispur police registered a suo motu case against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Station Officer Bhaskar Malla Patowary confirmed the case was filed based on evidence of fund misappropriation and submission of false information intended to mislead authorities.
The swift investigation highlights the importance of CCTV surveillance in verifying crime reports and exposing fraudulent complaints.
