With the advent of the New year, the Assam government planned to host a festival that will display Assam’s vibrant nature, Assamese tradition, culture, handicrafts and food.

The tourism department of Assam is to start a two-month-long festival on a sand bar of the mighty Brahmaputra to attract tourists from all over the globe to the capital city of Guwahati.

The name of the festival is yet to be finalized. The festival will continue till the sandbar remains of this season.

On Thursday, Tourism minister Jayanta Mallabaruah inspected the preparation of the site and informed the public that the state government of Assam has decided to make the sandbar of the Brahmaputra one of the hotspots for tourists.

He said, “We want to make the sandbar of the Brahmaputra River one of the attractive tourist destinations of the state. The festival from January 1 will continue for the next 2-3 months until the sandbar is available.”

Tourism minister Jayanta Mallabaruah explained that the festival would display the vibrant Assam, along with its tradition, culture, food, and handicraft. Various sports activities like water sports, paragliding, and traditional sports will also be included along with the festival for the visitors.

For traditional food and beverages, stalls will also be set up. The tourism department has decided to run a regular ferry at an interval of half an hour for the service of visitors to the festival.

“The festival will remain open from 10 AM to 9 PM daily. The entire festival arena will also be a plastic-free zone, and no Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) will be allowed to sell in the festival arena,” he added.
