Governor of Assam: Gulab Chand Kataria appointed as Hon’ble Governor of Assam

Gulab Chand Kataria, a member of the BJP and a former home minister of Rajasthan as well as the current Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the assembly of that state, will be appointed as the new governor of Assam, taking over for Jagdish Mukhi in the top position.

Kataria is one of the thirteen gubernatorial appointments that were announced by the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday; Rajasthan is one of the three states (the other two being Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh) that will go to the polls in November and December; these elections will be the final assembly elections before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Also from from the state of Rajasthan is Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar, whose tenure officially began in August of the previous year.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam and the leader of the BJP government that governs the northeastern state, expressed his approval of the nomination and stated that the new governor’s “extensive experience in public service will undoubtedly help Assam greatly.”

Kataria, a nine-term member of the Legislative Assembly of Rajasthan, served as the state’s home minister from 2004 to 2008 and again from 2013 to 2018. During all of these terms, the state was led by Vasundhara Raje Scindia, the most senior member of the saffron party in the desert state.

Both the BJP and the Congress have a moderate amount of support in Rajasthan, making it a swing state. It has voted out its sitting administration in the most recent few elections, with the BJP suffering a defeat in December 2018, the most recent of these elections. The Congress, on the other hand, is anticipating that this year will mark a reversal in the trend.
