George Baker Conferred with Prestigious Bhupen Hazarika Award

Alongside the Bihu celebrations, the Beltola Bohagi Utsav Samiti presented the Bharat Ratna Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika Award to renowned actor George Baker, a prominent figure in the Assamese film industry. Since 2012, the committee has been honoring luminaries in honor of the Bharat Ratna, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. This year, celebrated singer Samar Hazarika bestowed the award upon Mr. Baker on the night of April 21.

The prestigious award includes a cash prize of Rs 2,00,000, a citation, a souvenir, a pat gamosa, a cheleng sador, a rhino memento, a phulam japi, and a bust of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, among other prestigious items.

Upon receiving the award, George Baker expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the committee and acknowledged the contributions of notable personalities like Nirodh Chowdhury, Abdul Majid, and Bhupen Hazarika himself. He fondly recounted an instance when Bhupen Hazarika affectionately introduced him on stage as his son.

Recognizing Social Service and Assamese Culture

In addition to honoring George Baker, the committee celebrated the achievements of others who have made significant contributions to the state’s cultural and social fabric. Eminent social worker and renowned physician Dr. Sushil Kumar Jain, who was selected for the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Award for the year 2021, received his recognition during this year’s event. Dr. Jain graciously accepted the award, pledging to continue his dedicated social service in the future.

The Manmath Baishya Memorial Award was presented to singer Rupam Bhuyan on April 19, recognizing his contributions to the field of music.

Beltola Witnesses Vibrant Three-Day Bihu Extravaganza

The Beltola Bohagi Utsav Samiti in Guwahati celebrated the 45th edition of the Bohagi Utsav with a vibrant three-day program from April 19 to April 21 at the Beltola School grounds. The event, a colorful amalgamation of Bihu festivities and cultural recognition, paid tribute to the stalwarts of Assam’s literary and artistic landscape.

Celebrating Bihu Artistry and Excellence

The Beltola Bohagi Utsav Samiti also recognized exceptional talent in the realm of Bihu performances. Nirjuma Kakati of Nagaon was awarded the prestigious Patmadoi title for 2024, receiving a cash prize of Rs 2,00,000 along with a citation and a memento.

Furthermore, the Rangman Anajori Bihu Husori team emerged victorious as the best Bihu Husori team, securing a cash prize of Rs 1,00,001. The second prize was awarded to the Ranghar Bihu Hunchri Team, who received a cash prize of Rs 51,001.

As the Beltola Bohagi Utsav Samiti celebrated the 45th edition of the Bohagi Utsav, it not only showcased the vibrant cultural heritage of Assam but also honored the individuals who have dedicated their lives to preserving and promoting the state’s rich traditions.
