Former DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta named Assam’s chief information commissioner

In a recent move, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, a former director general of police (DGP), was named Assam’s chief information commissioner. Mahanta has already taken on the new duty after retiring on January 31, 2023. Once Mahanta retired from his position as DGP and Gyanendra Pratap Singh was named the new DGP of Assam, the appointment was made.

Mahanta was an IPS officer from the 1988 batch from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. He had been the Director General of Border (41RR) before that.His farewell speech showed that he was known for his great work and dedication to the state police force.

Mahanta thanked the Assam police force and praised each police officer who marched in the procession during his departure parade. He continued by saying that he would always admire the Assam Police and that for every police officer, their work is more of a service than a job. Additionally, he exhorted everyone to give Gyanendra Pratap Singh, the recently appointed DGP, their entire support.

Mahanta’s selection as the Chief Information Commissioner is seen as a big deal because he has a long history of working for the government.Mahanta’s appointment is expected to make the state information commission run better and make government business more open.

Once Mahanta’s term as director general of police (DGP) of Assam came to an end in January, GP Singh was chosen to replace him. When a long career in public service came to an end with Mahanta’s retirement, his new position was considered a continuation of his contributions to the state.
