Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi To Get Assam’s Highest Civilian Award

Ranjan Gogoi

The Assam government announced its decision to confer the Assam Baibhav award, the state’s highest civilian honor, to former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi.

Gogoi has been credited for his role as CJI in delivering the landmark Ayodhya temple-mosque dispute verdict in 2019 which paved the way for construction of the Ram Mandir.

Subsequently, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the then President in 2020 where he continues to serve presently.

As the first Chief Justice of India from the Northeast, Gogoi pioneered greater representation of the region at the apex level of the judiciary during his tenure.

The government also named four joint winners of the Assam Saurav award – the state’s second highest civilian honor. Archaeologist Kishan Chand Nauriyal, swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika, athlete Hima Das and Tiwa dancer Nadiram Deuri have been selected.

Moreover, seventeen distinguished personalities across different fields will be conferred the Assam Gaurav award, the third highest state honor, this year. They will receive Rs 3 lakhs along with a citation or medal.

The awards aim to recognize exemplary contributions made by citizens to public life and Assam’s pride. The state government’s selection of recipients honors those furthering regional identity while delivering justice, expanding representation, preserving heritage and achieving global feats.
