Former Assam Minister and veteran Congress leader Sukur Ali Ahmed passed away on Wednesday while undergoing treatment. The senior politician passed away at the age of 66, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service.
Ahmed represented the Chenga constituency in Barpeta district in the Assam Legislative Assembly. A stalwart of the Indian National Congress, he was elected as an MLA four times from Chenga. He first entered the Assembly in 1996 and was re-elected in 2001. Though he lost the 2006 election, he returned to the Assembly with victories in 2011 and 2016.
During the third term of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Sukur Ali Ahmed served as the Minister of Public Health Engineering, contributing significantly to infrastructure and development in the sector.
In the 2021 Assam Assembly election, Ahmed contested against AIUDF candidate Ashraful Hussain but was defeated.
His demise has cast a pall of gloom over Chenga and the entire political landscape of Assam. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi, along with several dignitaries and organizations, has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of the respected leader.
