Eminent Assamese dancer Gorima Hazarika passes away. Gorima Hazarika died at her Ulubari, Guwahati residence at around 1 pm due to old age. He was 83 years old at the time of his death.
In 2006, she won the Sangeet Natak Academy Award. Gorima Hazarika was a skilled dancer as well as a painter.
Gorima Hazarika was born on 27 April 1939 in Guwahati to Dr. Bhubaneswar Baruah and Indraprabha Baruah. Gorima was the youngest of five siblings. She became proficient in Kathak and Satriya at a very young age. She graduated from the Delhi School of Arts in 1962 with a Master’s degree in Odissi dance.
Gorima Hazarika founded Mithali Kala Kendra in 1982 under the guidance of Murlidhar Majhi, an Odyssey dance guru at Rabindra Bharati University. It is part of the Mithali Sangh, established in 1969 to work for the advancement of women and children. He made his debut at the 1992 South Asian Festival.
The famous artist’s death has left a shadow of mourning across the state.
