Meet Dr. Rupam Jyoti Sarma, the first Assamese to serve as a presidential advisor in American history

Dr. Rupam Jyoti Sarmah is the first Assamese to ever be appointed as a presidential advisor, which is a significant event for Assam.

The White House Presidential Innovation Fellow position has been given to Dr. Sarmah (PIF).

A group of senior strategic advisors known as the Presidential Innovation Fellows (PIF) has direct access to the heads of the decision-making agencies.

Usually, they have the institutional knowledge of agency civil officials and are subject matter specialists.

Dr. Rupam Jyoti Sarmah (ARPA-H) is in charge of the “Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health.”

Rupam took the oath on April 10, and on April 14, he’ll be at the “White House Welcome” celebration.

He received his diploma from Assam’s Jorhat Engineering College (JEC).

He currently resides in Sacramento, California.

After moving to the US, Rupam earned his Master’s in Computer Science, Master’s in Management, and Doctorate at the George Washington University, where he studied artificial intelligence and autism.

Before being appointed to PIF 2023, he served as the State of California’s Chief Information Officer (CIO).

Interestingly, 19 more PIF fellows have also been chosen from a variety of industries, including technology, healthcare organisations, financial services, and more, in addition to Dr. Sarmah.

Dr. Rupam Jyoti Sarmah is an Assamese native who was born in Jorhat.

Dr. Rupam Sarmah has a 25 years of experience working in public and private sectors on data modernization, AI, media, and health research tackling challenges with innovation. He aims to contribute to humanity through equitable and accessible technology solutions.

Rupam has founded technology startups and non-profit organizations, creating platforms for individuals with developmental disabilities and underprivileged children, promoting inclusion and diversity. He has collaborated with people from all walks of life in over 30 countries and positively impacted people’s lives. He led digital transformation and global infrastructure for startups and Fortune-5 companies.

Dr Sarma is passionate about ARPA-H’s vision of finding cures for cancer, Alzheimer, etc.
