A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer allegedly shot dead two of his colleagues, critically injured another, and later died by suicide at the CRPF's 34 Battalion camp in Katimari under Assam's Nagaon district on Tuesday morning, police said.
According to police, the incident took place at around 7:30 am when an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), a native of Andhra Pradesh who was deployed at the main gate of the battalion camp, allegedly took an INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifle from the guard room and opened fire on his colleagues.
The victims have been identified as Sub-Inspector Ramnawal Singh Yadav, Assistant Sub-Inspector Mane Govind Sripul and Head Constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Partha Pratim Das said that Sub-Inspector Ramnawal Singh Yadav and Head Constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel died on the spot.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Mane Govind Sripul sustained serious gunshot injuries and was initially admitted to a local hospital before being referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced treatment.
Police said the accused ASI later used the same service rifle to shoot himself. He died at the scene.
"The ASI later shot himself with the same rifle. However, the motive behind the incident is yet to be established," SSP Partha Pratim Das said.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the firing. Officials said all aspects of the incident, including the officer's service history and possible reasons behind the attack, are being examined.
