Assam Police have arrested more than 34 people associated with Al Qaeda. While talking to the media, DGP Assam Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, “More than 34 people affiliated with Al-Qaeda have already been arrested. Assam Police won’t allow these kinds of conspiracies to succeed and prosper.

The Assam DGP also stated that some new groups are forming in the state to spread radicalisation and exploit the youth.

DGP Mahanta said, “There are different types of groups of Madrasas in Assam. Some new groups are sprouting up and taking advantage. Conspiracy hatching from outside Assam, currently from Bangladesh and Al Qaeda-affiliated groups, influencing youth to spread radicalisation,”

Earlier, two Islamic clerics were arrested in Assam’s Goalpara district, having links with terror outfit Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and associated with radicalising Muslim youths in the state.

On August 20, the duo were taken into custody and arrested the next day for their alleged links with Bangladesh outfits engaged in radicalising youths. The arrested duo of clerics were involved in jihadi activities for the last three to four years and radicalising youths.

Superintendent of Police VV Rakesh Reddy said, “We have also found that they have links with several jihadis arrested in the state earlier and another who was apprehended in West Bengal,”

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had also reacted recently and said that for “jihadi activities” Assam has become a hotbed.
