In a significant move, the Congress party appointed Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi as the new president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday. The announcement was made through an official press release by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) dated May 26.
The party has also appointed three Working Presidents to assist Gogoi in revitalising the party in the state: Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, and Pradip Sarkar. Notably, Roselina Tirkey has been relieved from her previous role as AICC Secretary to take on this new responsibility.
The AICC press release stated:
“Hon’ble Congress President has appointed the President and Working Presidents of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee as follows, with immediate effect.”
The party has also acknowledged and appreciated the leadership and efforts of outgoing APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah, who led the party during a challenging period.
Shortly after the announcement, Gaurav Gogoi expressed his heartfelt gratitude through a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“I am grateful to Congress President Shri @kharge ji, LOP Shri @RahulGandhi ji, GSO Shri @kcvenugopalmp ji and GS Shri @JitendraSAlwar ji for trusting me with this responsibility. Former PCC President Shri @BhupenKBorah led the party from the front and made a tremendous contribution,” Gogoi wrote.
He also paid tribute to his father, late Tarun Gogoi, former Chief Minister of Assam, and acknowledged the support of his family.
“I would not have been here without the guidance of my parents and the support of my family especially my wife and children… I am confident that together we can create a better future for our state. Joi Ai Axom! Jai Hind!” he added.
Gogoi’s elevation is seen as a strategic move ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, as the Congress aims to strengthen its base and connect with the people of Assam more effectively.
With this reshuffle, the Congress is expected to focus on inclusive leadership and grassroots mobilization in Assam, a key state in the Northeast political landscape.
