The Charaideo Maidam, located in the Charaideo district of Upper Assam, is a sacred burial site of the Ahom dynasty, who ruled Assam for over 600 years. The site houses more than 90 royal burial mounds (locally known as maidams), often likened to the pyramids of Egypt for their architectural and spiritual significance.
The recognition by UNESCO in 2024 marked a historic milestone, celebrating the Ahom kingdom’s rich legacy, megalithic burial practices, and unique blend of Tai-Ahom culture.
This global honour followed a concerted push from the Assam government. During an earlier visit, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma had revealed that he personally requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to nominate Charaideo Maidam as India’s official contender for UNESCO status — a move that bore fruit later that year.
Today’s event also focused on crafting a roadmap for sustainable tourism, community engagement, and archaeological conservation. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the site from urban encroachment and environmental degradation while developing it as a major heritage tourism destination.
As Assam continues to embrace its past while moving toward the future, Charaideo Maidam stands as a proud testament to its royal heritage, spiritual depth, and global cultural relevance.
