In a major relief measure for flood-affected regions, the Central Government has approved ₹313.69 crore in additional assistance for Assam under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to help the state recover from the devastating floods and landslides that struck in 2024.
The decision was taken by a High-Level Committee (HLC) chaired by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah, which sanctioned a total of ₹707.97 crore in additional central aid for Assam and Gujarat. Of this, ₹313.69 crore has been earmarked for Assam, while ₹394.28 crore has been allocated to Gujarat.
Officials said the funds are meant to support restoration and rehabilitation efforts in districts severely affected by last year’s monsoon-related disasters. The assistance will be provided from the NDRF, subject to adjustment of 50% of the opening balance available in the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for the current financial year.
The Centre emphasized that this aid is over and above the funds already released to states through the SDRF. During FY 2025–26, the Central Government has so far released ₹13,603.20 crore to 27 states under the SDRF and ₹2,024.04 crore under the NDRF to 12 states.
Underlining the Centre’s continued support to disaster-hit states, a Home Ministry statement said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India stands shoulder to shoulder with the states during natural calamities, ensuring timely and adequate assistance.”
In addition to the flood relief allocation, the HLC also approved ₹903.67 crore for Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan for the Expansion and Modernization of Fire Services, of which ₹676.33 crore will be provided as central assistance.
Assam, which faces recurrent floods and landslides every year, has welcomed the move. State officials said the funds will be utilized for rebuilding damaged infrastructure, repairing embankments, and supporting affected families through relief and rehabilitation programmes.
