In a proud moment for Assam, the traditional Assamese jewellery known as Axomiya Gohona has been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, officially recognizing its unique cultural identity and craftsmanship that dates back over a millennium.
The GI certificate, issued on March 27, 2025, acknowledges Axomiya Gohona as an artisanal product that embodies the rich heritage of the region. The application, filed by the Gems and Jewellery Promotion Council of Assam (GJPCA) on March 28, 2022, was listed in GI Journal No. 196 under certificate number 664.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the occasion, writing, “Assam’s jewellery – an inseparable part of our heritage – has received its own Geographical Indication (GI) tag. I distinctly remember that in the 2018-19 Budget, we had proposed to secure GI tag to protect our artisans. Happy to see these efforts have been realised.”

What is a GI Tag?
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a form of intellectual property protection that identifies products originating from a specific location, attributing their unique qualities, reputation, or characteristics to that origin. In India, GI tags are governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
Such certifications serve to protect traditional knowledge, assure authenticity to consumers, and drive economic growth by enhancing the product’s visibility in both domestic and international markets. The registration is valid for 10 years and can be renewed thereafter.
A Heritage of Elegance and Identity
Axomiya Gohona is not just ornamentation but a living tradition that has adorned Assamese women for generations. Made primarily from gold and often embedded with vibrant gemstones, these ornaments feature motifs drawn from nature and mythology, including elements like the Lokaparo, Jonbiri, and Dholbiri. Historical records and literary works spanning centuries reference these designs, underscoring their timeless appeal.
The GI tag not only authenticates the craft but also provides legal safeguards against imitation, ensuring that the benefits reach the artisans and craftsmen who have preserved this legacy.
Assam’s GI Crown
With the inclusion of Axomiya Gohona, Assam adds another jewel to its growing portfolio of GI-tagged products. Other notable items include:
-
Agricultural Goods: Tezpur Litchi, Joha Rice, Karbi Anglong Ginger, Chokuwa Rice, Boka Chaul, Kaji Nemu (lemon)
-
Handicrafts & Traditional Items: Muga Silk, Gamosa, Assam Jaapi (traditional bamboo hat), Sarthebari Metal Craft, Panimeteka Craft, and Asharikandi Terracotta Craft
This recognition is expected to open new avenues for global branding and market access, while also preserving the identity and pride of Assamese artisans.
