A 30-year-old woman was brutally raped and attacked with acid in the presence of her two children in Assam’s Cachar district, police reported on Wednesday. The horrifying incident took place in the Dholai police station area, sending shockwaves through the community.
The accused—a 28-year-old driver who lived nearby—forcefully entered the woman’s residence on January 22. In a harrowing ordeal, he sexually assaulted her and then doused her with acid before fleeing the scene. The victim’s two children witnessed the atrocity, adding to the trauma inflicted upon the family.
The woman’s husband returned home to find her bound by her hands and feet, severely injured and in critical condition. He immediately sought help, and the victim was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors confirmed her condition remains critical.
A formal police complaint was registered the following day, and authorities have since launched a manhunt to capture the accused, who remains absconding.
