In a major administrative development aimed at decentralizing governance, the Assam government announced that 10 more co-districts will be operational by August 15. The announcement was shared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through his official social media handle on Monday.
The newly operational co-districts include Boko-Chaygaon, Palasbari, Barchalla, Rangapara, and Makum, among others. The initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to enhance local administration and service delivery, in line with Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of self-governance and rural empowerment.
“Fulfilling Bapu’s dreams — taking governance closer to the people,” the Chief Minister’s message stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to effective grassroots governance.

According to the official announcement, the co-districts will be empowered with a wide range of administrative responsibilities. These include Revenue and Disaster Management, General Administration, Transformation and Development, Personnel Management, Food and Civil Supplies, Excise, and Panchayat and Rural Development. Magistracy functions will also be integrated at the local level.
The concept of co-districts involves subdividing larger administrative districts to facilitate quicker public service delivery, reduce bureaucratic delays, and improve disaster response mechanisms.
Assam has been gradually implementing this model to address the growing demands of a rapidly urbanizing and populous state. With the addition of these 10 co-districts, the government aims to streamline governance mechanisms, particularly in rural and semi-urban pockets.
The Chief Minister’s office has also indicated that necessary infrastructure and personnel postings are being fast-tracked to ensure that the new administrative units are fully functional by Independence Day.
