The Assam government has now taken a tough stand after arresting two Imams who had links with the terrorists. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered that there will be police verification of Imams coming from outside states.
If Imams from other states want to come to Assam, they will have to give their name, address and further details on a portal. After police verification, they will be allowed to come to Assam.
Along with this, CM Sarma appealed to the people of Assam that if they see any unknown Imam in their area or village, then immediately inform the police.
Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that the Assam government had made a standard operating procedure, i.e. SOP, regarding the Imams. If people cannot identify an imam, then immediately inform the police. After which, the police will verify them. Only then will the Imam be allowed to stay there.
Sarma added that all communities, including Muslims in Assam, are helping the government in this matter. He said the Imams of Assam would not have to register on the government portal to move anywhere in the state.
Only those Imams who come from outside Assam need to get verified by the police by giving all their information on this portal.
Let us tell you that on August 20, two Imams were arrested in Goalpara in Assam. Their names are Abdus and Jalaluddin. The police have accused Abdus and Jalaluddin of trying to radicalize Muslim youth.
Both of them were also known to have links with al-Qaeda. They were earlier taken into custody based on suspicion. Later the police arrested both of them after getting the evidence.
Abdus and Jalaluddin were also in contact with Bangladeshi terrorist organization. After interrogating them and the accomplices are also being traced by the police.
