Assam Police has arrested three more individuals for allegedly making pro-Pakistan and anti-national remarks, raising the total number of arrests in such cases to 42 since the April 22 Pahalgam incident. The arrests were confirmed by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma through social media on Sunday.

Labeling the accused as “traitors” and “anti-nationals”, CM Sarma stated,
“Our Assam Police continues its consistent efforts to identify and detain those who, despite living in India, make statements against the nation.”
On Sunday, Azibor Rahman was arrested by Barpeta Police, Jaynal Uddin by Hojai Police, and Ashraful Islam by Chirang Police. These arrests brought the total number of apprehensions in the ongoing operation to 42.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the public to report any anti-national activity or statements to the authorities immediately.

Among those detained so far, Cachar district in Barak Valley has recorded the highest number of arrests-five people, who are currently lodged in jail.

The arrests come amid the Assam Panchayat elections, where voting in the first phase took place on May 2 across 14 districts. The second phase is set for May 7.

During a recent campaign in Goalpara district, CM Sarma issued a stern warning:
“Those who eat India’s salt and praise Pakistan—we will break their legs through legal means. No one will be spared. Within the framework of the law, we will take every necessary step so that no one dares to shout ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ in Assam again.”

Importantly, the list of arrested individuals also includes a sitting legislator. Aminul Islam, MLA from Dhing constituency representing the opposition party AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front), was arrested on April 24 after allegedly delivering a speech supporting Pakistan and criticizing India. He is currently held in Nagaon Jail.
