Assam: Minority status to be given 6 religious communities of Assam

At a cabinet meeting, the Assam govt announced that 6 religious communities that is Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsi in Assam would be given the status of Minority.`

Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said that the decision to provide a minority scheme to the six religious communities of the state had been taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.

About Assam Minority Development Board –

The Assam Minorities Development Board was registered on 4th April 1985 under the Societies Registration Act 1860. The object of the Board is “Charitable,” Particularly to benefit 6 (Six) notified religious Minority Communities in Assam, namely Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis, by examining the problems of the communities.

The Board is to advise ways and measures to protect the constitutional rights of these particular communities. It is to formulate schemes to advance education and promote employment opportunities amongst the notified minority communities.

In brief, the Board is to identify the problems of economic backwardness and evaluate and study welfare schemes for minorities.
