Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu on Monday inaugurated an automated SMS alert system designed to notify parents and teachers when students are absent from school without permission.
The new “Automated SMS Absenteeism Alert System” was launched at the Samagra Shiksha Assam office and will be integrated with the state’s existing Shiksha Setu application.
How the System Works
The platform automatically sends SMS notifications to parents if their child remains absent from school for five or more consecutive days without prior permission. Class teachers will also receive alerts, enabling coordinated follow-up on student attendance.
Bridging the Communication Gap
The initiative addresses a longstanding challenge in monitoring student attendance across Assam’s vast school network. By automating parent communication, the system aims to reduce dropout rates and ensure timely intervention when students disengage from education.
“I appreciate the entire Education Assam for such an addition to school education in the state,” Dr. Pegu wrote on social media platform X while announcing the launch.
Technology-Driven Education Reform
The SMS alert system represents another step in Assam’s efforts to leverage technology for educational improvement. The Shiksha Setu app already serves as a centralized platform for various school management functions, and the absenteeism tracker adds a critical monitoring layer.
The automated approach is expected to ease the administrative burden on teachers while keeping parents informed about their children’s school attendance in real time.
