In a groundbreaking move toward sustainable and eco-friendly mobility solutions, the Assam government has launched ‘Baayu,’ an app-based electric bike taxi service. This innovative initiative is spearheaded by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and was officially flagged off by Assam’s Minister of Transport, Parimal Suklabaidya, in the state capital, Guwahati.
‘Baayu’ is India’s first app-based 100% electric and decentralized bike taxi service, emphasizing the state’s commitment to environmentally friendly transportation. The initiative is a collaboration between ASTC and Bikozee Ecotech, a startup based in Assam. The service aims to provide sustainable mobility solutions integrated with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
Key features of ‘Baayu’ include:
- Zero-Emission Bike Taxi & Delivery Services: The electric bikes used for the taxi service will contribute to reducing carbon emissions, promoting environmental conservation.
- Livelihood Opportunities: ‘Baayu’ aims to generate 5,000 livelihood opportunities for driver partners in Assam. The support includes providing electric vehicles, technology platforms, insurance, training, skill development, and operating licenses in accordance with Assam Aggregator rules 2022.
- Environmental Impact: The initiative is expected to save an impressive 29,000 tons of carbon emissions annually, making a significant contribution to environmental conservation.
- Cost Savings: ‘Baayu’ is projected to save Rs 73 crore annually on fuel costs, further highlighting the economic and environmental benefits of the electric bike taxi service.
This forward-thinking initiative aligns with global efforts to transition to sustainable and green modes of transportation, setting a noteworthy example for other regions to follow.
