Assam: Headmistress arrested on charges of hurting religious sentiments

The Assam Police on Monday (May 16, 2022) arrested a school teacher for bringing beef to the school.

The 56-year-old teacher was charged under Sections 153A (spreading enmity between different groups based on religion, caste, place of birth and residence) and 295A (knowingly and maliciously insulting any class’s religion or religious beliefs). A case has been registered.

The teacher was identified as Dalima Nesa, the headmistress of Hurakchungi Middle English School in Lakshipur in the district. The arrest was made on a complaint by the school management committee. The teacher brought beef during the Gunotsav. During lunch, a colleague saw the headmistress eating beef.

“The teacher brought beef to the school and gave it to some employees, which caused embarrassment to some colleagues. The incident has hurt the emotions of both communities,” the school management said.

The incident took place during the Gunotsav celebrations on Saturday, to which the school objected. The school filed a case against the teacher, and she was questioned and arrested.

Last year, the Assam government implemented the Assam Cow Protection Act, which bans the sale and purchase of beef within a radius of 5 km near Hindu, Sikh and Jain pilgrimage sites in Assam. There is a large Hindu population and many temples in the area where the incident occurred.
