Assam government has decided to do away with the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota on jobs. Meanwhile, the reservation under EWS would continue for admissions to educational institutions.
An official notification from the Department said: “Governor of Assam is contented to keep the matter of reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in direct recruitment in posts and services under Government of Assam in suspension until further order. Provided that this shall not be applicable in cases where the vacancies have already been assessed and advertised.”
It said: “However, the reservation for the Economically Weaker Section category as provided ……will continue for admissions in Educational Institutions.”
The opposition parties- Congress, Trinamool Congress, the All-India United Democratic Front, and others have strongly condemned Assam’s BJP government decision regarding scraping off the EWS quota in jobs.
Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition (Congress), disparaged the state government’s decision, saying it was a cost-cutting measure because of a financial crisis brought by overgenerous expenditure on several projects and schemes.
