Assam’s flood situation remained grim on Sunday, with more than 1.47 lakh people continuing to be affected by the ongoing deluge. Two more deaths have been reported, taking the official death toll from this year’s floods to 100, according to the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) Assam bulletin.
The latest bulletin stated that the floods have caused widespread damage across several parts of the state. Authorities also clarified that the death figures for Sivasagar district were revised after a duplicate entry was identified in the reported data. One death had been recorded twice under the same name, resulting in the district’s reported toll being revised from 50 to 49.
Cachar remains among the worst-affected districts, with 22 deaths reported, while Sivasagar has recorded 49 fatalities following the correction. Karimganj has reported nine deaths and Golaghat eight. Fatalities have also been reported from Dhemaji, Nagaon, Udalguri, Sonitpur and Karbi Anglong.
Amid the continuing flood situation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that doorstep assessment of flood-related damage had begun across all affected districts. The assessment will cover damaged houses, livestock and other losses caused by the floods.
Sarma said the entire assessment exercise is expected to be completed by August 31. He also assured that no affected family would be left out of the rehabilitation process and that all eligible families would receive the benefits due to them.
Meanwhile, rescue and relief operations are continuing in the affected areas as authorities respond to the impact of the floods.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast further rainfall in Assam and neighbouring northeastern states. According to the weather department, Assam and Meghalaya are likely to receive rainfall on August 10 and 11, with another spell of widespread rainfall expected during August 12 to 15. Arunachal Pradesh is also likely to experience widespread rainfall during August 12 to 15, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to receive rainfall during the forecast period.
The IMD has further warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the country during the period, including Assam and Meghalaya on August 14 and 15, while Arunachal Pradesh is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during August 14 and 15.
With thousands of people still affected by the floods and further rainfall forecast in the region, authorities are continuing relief operations alongside the assessment of damage to homes, livestock and other property.
