Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the flood-affected areas of Golaghat district on Sunday to assess the situation and inspect relief camps set up by the district administration. The recent floods have severely impacted the revenue circles of Khumtai, Sarupathar, Bokakhat, Morongi, Golaghat, and Dergaon, affecting thousands of residents and damaging agricultural land.
The Chief Minister began his visit at the Simoluchapori Primary School relief camp in Sarupathar Revenue Circle, which is currently sheltering 277 flood-affected people, including 104 children and adolescents and 108 women. The floods in Sarupathar have impacted 1,708 people across 31 villages, damaging 451.7 hectares of agricultural land. Four relief camps have been established in the circle to accommodate the affected population.
During his visit, CM Sarma interacted with the camp residents, spending time with children and even playing carrom with them. He directed the district administration to distribute sports equipment, such as cricket and football kits, to children from No. 1 Shingimari village staying at the camp. He also instructed the District Commissioner to conduct a comprehensive damage assessment and ensure compensation for the affected families.
The Chief Minister visited erosion-affected areas at Jathipatiya Mitha Aam Chapori in Morongi Revenue Circle, where the Dhansiri River has caused significant damage, impacting thousands across multiple villages. He assured locals that he would direct the Water Resources Minister to visit the area and initiate measures for a permanent solution to the erosion problem. Additionally, he reviewed a proposed project to construct an embankment on the left bank of the Dhansiri River from Golaghat town to the Numaligarh Refinery.
At the Simoluchapori Primary School, CM Sarma inspected a special health camp and directed officials to ensure adequate healthcare, particularly for pregnant women, the elderly, and children. The district administration has been conducting health camps across all relief camps in Golaghat, providing check-ups and essential medicines.
In Bokakhat Revenue Circle, where over 9,000 people have been affected, the Chief Minister visited the relief camp at Numaligarh Higher Secondary School, currently housing 568 people, including 112 children, 2 differently-abled persons, and 224 women. He assured financial assistance for those whose houses were completely destroyed and directed Agriculture Minister Atul Bora and local MLA to arrange seed distribution for affected farmers.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, MLA Mrinal Saikia, along with the District Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) during his visits.
CM Sarma emphasized the state government’s commitment to supporting flood-affected residents, ensuring timely resettlement, compensation, and long-term solutions to recurring issues like erosion. The district administration has been instructed to prioritize the needs of vulnerable groups and provide comprehensive relief measures to those affected by the floods.
