The Assam Cabinet has officially approved the renaming of Dibrugarh airport after legendary musician and cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday. The move comes as part of celebrations marking Hazarika’s birth centenary this year.
Speaking at a press conference following the cabinet meeting, CM Sarma revealed that a special one-day assembly session will be convened specifically to pass a resolution regarding the airport renaming. This resolution will then be forwarded to the Union government for final approval and implementation.

Currently known as Dibrugarh Airport or Mohanbari Airport, the facility serves as a vital transportation hub for Upper Assam. The airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India, features a single runway and terminal building that can accommodate up to 500 passengers. Located approximately 15 km east of Dibrugarh city center, it handles domestic flights connecting the region to major cities across India.
