In a pioneering step toward sustainable infrastructure, Assam has constructed its first road using recycled plastic in Barpeta district, marking a significant stride in both environmental conservation and infrastructure innovation.
The initiative, which involves blending shredded plastic waste with bitumen for road construction, is aimed at enhancing road durability while reducing plastic pollution. Officials say the plastic-bitumen mix not only strengthens the surface but also helps in effective disposal of non-biodegradable waste.
“This is a revolutionary step and a first for Assam,” a senior official involved in the project stated. “It’s an innovative way to turn plastic waste into a valuable resource.”

The newly constructed road stretch in Barpeta has already drawn public and administrative attention. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a video of the road on his social media platforms, lauding the initiative and encouraging similar eco-friendly efforts across the state.
Plastic roads have been implemented in other parts of India, including Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, and are known for their resistance to water damage and longer lifespan compared to conventional roads. Assam’s adoption of the technology signifies a growing commitment to green development and sustainable waste management practices.
