In a separate event, Chief Minister Sarma, alongside Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain, inaugurated the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy in Barchandra, North Guwahati. This academy marks a significant step toward nurturing grassroots boxing talent in the northeast. The facility, the first of its kind in Guwahati, features a 26×26 dimension boxing ring and a fully equipped gymnasium, aimed at providing aspiring boxers with top-tier infrastructure and expert guidance.
Sarma praised Borgohain’s initiative, stating, “Lovlina has not only brought immense glory to Assam and India with her Olympic medal but has also become a beacon of inspiration for countless aspiring athletes. The launch of the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy is a testament to her dedication to nurturing grassroots talent and will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the future of boxing in our state.” He further highlighted the academy’s role in identifying and developing the next generation of champions from Assam.
The Assam government has pledged significant support for the academy, including a grant of 2 crore. Additionally, the government will assist with land acquisition and funding for hostel construction, as well as cover expenses related to coaching staff and future expansion of the academy.
These initiatives reflect the state’s commitment to both environmental conservation and the development of sports talent, positioning Assam as a hub for progress in these areas.
