The Chief Minister had first announced the decision on May 10, stating that the state government had resolved to rename Dibrugarh Airport after Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, and a special session of the Assembly would be held to formalize this proposal.
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, an iconic cultural figure of Assam, elevated Assamese culture on the global stage through his timeless songs and music. In recognition of his contributions, the Government of India conferred upon him the Bharat Ratna. The decision to rename the airport has been widely welcomed across various sections of society in Assam, with many expressing their appreciation on social media.
This initiative is seen as a significant part of the centenary celebrations of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. In 2026, marking his birth centenary, various programs are planned in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The adoption of the renaming proposal during this special session is expected to serve as a memorable tribute to Assam’s cultural heritage and Dr. Hazarika’s legacy.
