Assam Administration Initiates Eviction Drive to Clear Encroachments in Orang National Park

Starting today, a significant eviction drive is underway in Assam’s Darrang district, aiming to free around 10,000 bighas of land from encroachments in the Orang National Park. This three-day program will focus on approximately 12 chars within the national park’s boundaries.

The administration has targeted specific areas for the drive, including Nabo Char, Goraimari Char, Hamu Char, and Dimbu Char. These regions have been recognized as significant points of encroachment that require immediate action to protect and preserve the ecological integrity of Orang National Park.

Local law enforcement personnel, including Assam Police, have already arrived at the eviction site, and the operation is set to begin shortly. The deployment of the police force signifies the seriousness with which the administration is approaching this eviction drive.

Notably, many individuals have voluntarily relocated upon learning of the impending eviction. This move is in line with the government’s strategy, which involved planning and arranging for the establishment of alternative accommodations for those affected by the drive prior to its commencement.
