All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam has been arrested under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) following his alleged controversial remarks concerning the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Nagaon Superintendent of Police, Swapnaneel Deka, confirmed the development, stating, “We have detained Aminul Islam under the National Security Act (NSA) and lodged him at the district jail in Nagaon.”
According to police sources, a video had gone viral on social media in which Aminul Islam, who represents the Dhing Assembly constituency, reportedly made statements deemed sympathetic toward terrorists involved in the Pahalgam incident. Authorities say the remarks had the potential to incite unrest and posed a threat to public order.
“A case was registered after a video surfaced where the MLA made a highly objectionable statement regarding the Pahalgam terror attack. In the video, he appeared to defend the terrorists. Taking serious note, the police initiated legal proceedings and arrested him,” SP Deka said.
Islam has been booked under multiple sections of the newly enforced Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 152, 196, 197(1), 113(3), 352, and 353. The Assam Police took to the social media platform X to share details of the case (Nagaon PS Case No. 347/25), citing that his statements were misleading and instigating and could disturb communal harmony.
This arrest is part of a wider crackdown launched by Assam Police, who on May 1 apprehended 36 individuals, including Islam—for allegedly expressing pro-Pakistan sentiments across various platforms.
The incident has sparked significant political and public attention, with law enforcement emphasizing that actions threatening national integrity will be dealt with sternly.
