The filing of nomination papers for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Assam, scheduled for April 26, has commenced, with 14 candidates submitting their papers so far, including nine who filed on Tuesday.

The second phase of the parliamentary polls in the state will be held across five constituencies: Darrang-Udalguri, Diphu (ST), Karimganj, Silchar (SC), and Nagaon. The last date for filing nomination papers is April 4, followed by scrutiny on April 5 and the final date for withdrawal of candidature on April 8.

Among those who filed their nominations on Tuesday, one candidate each submitted papers in Darrang-Udalguri and Diphu, while two candidates each filed in Karimganj and Nagaon, and three in Silchar.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Diphu (ST) constituency, Amarsing Tisso, took out a massive rally on his way to file his nomination papers. Addressing the public during the rally, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence in Tisso’s victory.

Speaking to the media later, the Chief Minister emphasized that the sole issue in this election is the re-election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The people of India want Prime Minister Narendra Modi to continue and lead India towards the Amrit Kaal,” he said.

Sarma further highlighted the development initiatives undertaken by the Modi government in the tribal areas of Assam. “Assam’s tribal areas have long suffered from the vice of insurgency, but due to Narendra Modi’s single-minded focus on developing our tribal areas, we have signed agreements with all groups, and there’s a wave of development in the tribal areas of Assam,” he stated.

BJP candidates, including Minister Parimal Suklabaidya from Silchar and MP Kripanath Mallah from Karimganj, are expected to file their nomination papers on Wednesday.

The filing of nominations marks the commencement of the electoral process for the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls in Assam, which will witness a high-stakes battle between various political parties vying for the five parliamentary seats.
